What Jimmy Fallon Did
Conor McGregor was found liable for rape in a civil trial in 2024. The paramedic who responded called what she witnessed shocking. The victim was awarded $285,000 in damages. Yet, his invitations did not stop. Last week, one of those came from Jimmy Fallon.
Fallon didn’t rape anyone. He just gave a man who did a couch, a camera, and a crowd. He asked easy questions. He laughed at the right moments. He did what nice guys do: he made it comfortable. He made it normal. He held the door open.
What Do We Do with the Art of Monstrous Men?
They did or said something awful, and made something great. The awful thing disrupts the great work; we can’t watch or listen to or read the great work without remembering the awful thing. Flooded with knowledge of the maker’s monstrousness, we turn away, overcome by disgust. Or … we don’t. We continue watching, separating or trying to separate the artist from the art. Either way: disruption. They are monster geniuses, and I don’t know what to do about them.
