I’m in “Babell Preparing” mode and started with “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood. I confess I expected more from the book than it gave me…
I feel like I reached the end without fully understand what actually happened. I had difficulty getting into the story and connecting with the protagonist.
The book is a dystopia in which the author draws on themes based on real events in human history, such as dictatorships, historical theocracies, systems of reproductive control, and the oppression of women.
In any case, the story engaged me. I now know there is a sequel, “The Testaments”. I liked it, and I feel I can understand the story better and connect more deeply with the characters.
Estou em modo “Prepara Babell” e comecei com a “A História de uma Serva” da Margaret Atwood. Confesso que esperava bem mais do que o livro me deu…
Sinto que cheguei ao fim sem perceber muito bem o que realmente se passou. Tive dificuldade em entrar na história e em interligar-me com a protagonista.
O livro é uma distopia em que a autora se baseou em diferentes temas que já aconteceram ao longo da história da humanidade. Tais como: ditadura, teocracias históricas e sistemas de controlo reprodutivo e opressão feminina.
De qualquer das formas foi uma história que me deixou intrigada, sei que agora tem a continuação (”Os Testamentos”). Gostava de ler para ver se consigo perceber melhor a história e interligar-me com as personagens.

The author has written more than fifty works of fiction, as well as poetry and essays. Her most acclaimed work is “The Handmaid’s Tale”. Throughout her long career, she has received several awards, including the Booker Prize in 2000 for “The Blind Assassin” and again in 2019 for “The Testaments”. In 2022, the University of Porto awarded her the title of Doutora Honoris Causa. Her work has been translated into more than forty languages.
Besides her writing and other activities, the author is one of the most active voices in defense of women’s rights.
A autora tem mais de cinquenta livros de ficção, poesia e ensaio publicados, A sua obra mais aclamada foi “A História de uma Serva”. Ao longo da sua carreira já recebeu vários prémios, tais como: Booker Prize, em 2000 com o livro “O Assassino Cego” e em 2019 com o livro “Os Testamentos. A Universidade do Porto concedeu-lhe o título de Doutora Honoris Causa, em 2022. A sua obra, encontra-se traduzida em mais de 40 idiomas.
Através da sua escrita e não só, é uma das vozes mais ativas na defesa dos direitos das mulheres.
